Guanacaste is the 5th province of Costa Rica, located in the extreme northwest of the country. It limits to the north with the Republic of Nicaragua, to the east with Alajuela, to the south with Puntarenas and to the west with the Pacific Ocean. It has an area of 10,140 km². Due to its extension, it is the second largest province in the country, but also the most unpopulated, in which 326,953 people live.2 It is divided into 11 cantons and 47 districts. Its head is Liberia, located 210 kilometers from San José.

The territory of Guanacaste includes most of the former Nicoya Party, which was annexed to the country on July 25, 1824. Its relief combines the volcanic peaks of the Guanacaste mountain range with wide plains that open up to the Pacific. The Guanacaste Conservation Area (ACG) is located in the province, which is a World Heritage Site declared by Unesco in 1999. It includes, among others, the Santa Rosa National Park, the Guanacaste National Park and the Rincón de la Vieja, covering 1470 km² of protected areas. In Guanacaste there are also the Palo Verde and Barra Honda national parks. It has one of the few blue zones in the world, on the Nicoya peninsula.

The province is characterized by its large expanses of plains, land conducive to raising cattle and growing grains, especially those formed by the Tempisque river valley, which is why the province is nicknamed "la pampa" and also "the lowland". Guanacaste is famous for its landscapes, its beaches that border the Pacific Ocean coast, and a much sunnier and drier climate than in the rest of the country, which makes it one of the main tourist poles in Costa Rica.

The province is also the source of a large number of Costa Rican folkloric manifestations, such as music, instruments such as the marimba and the quijongo, traditional dances such as the Guanacaste point, gastronomy derived from corn and cattle, and the culture of life of the farm and the field.
