During the Conquest, the first Spaniard to cross the Valle del General region was Juan Vázquez de Coronado, in 1563. Later, between the years 1659 and 1663, the soldier and governor of the Province of Costa Rica at that time, Andrés Arias Maldonado and Velasco, together with their son, explored the area and subdued the indigenous people who inhabited it without any resistance.

The first recorded occupations of this territory were by indigenous people from the group called Borucas, from the then Chiefdoms of the South Pacific.

The region was first populated, around the year 1840, by inhabitants of what is now the canton of Desamparados, the canton of Dota, Valle de los Santos, the canton of Tarrazú and the canton of Alajuelita.
