Puerto Jiménez is the 2nd district of the canton of Golfito, Province of Puntarenas. Its homonymous head town is located at the entrance of golfo Dulce, being the southernmost and most distant seaport in the country.
The district of Puerto Jiménez measures 720.54 km2 and has an estimated population of 8,791 inhabitants (2011), with an average population density of about 10 hab/km2.
It was the gold mining center in the 1970s, where many farmers worked with several mining companies. Currently Puerto Jiménez has banks, a small airport of commercial flights from San José, hospital, Red Cross service, restaurants of variety of national and international meals, hotels, cabins and supermarkets among other basic services
In Puerto Jiménez you can make reservations to visit the Corcovado National Park in the MINAE office and is considered one of the places with the greatest biodiversity in the world.
A very important detail is the great natural beauty that the canton counts outside the Corcovado National Park some of its main attractions is the sport fishing of sailfish, boating, horseback riding, ecological cycling, and its beautiful beaches.
