Puntarenas is a city in Costa Rica, and capital of the canton of Puntarenas and the province of Puntarenas, the largest in the country. It is the largest and most populated city in the Costa Rican Pacific. Its metropolitan area is made up of 4 districts of the canton to which it belongs: Puntarenas, Barranca, El Roble and Chacarita. It is located on the eastern coast of the Gulf of Nicoya, facing the Nicoya Peninsula, in the Pacific Ocean, on a spit of land that gives rise to its name.

The city of Puntarenas is rich in history, traditions and customs. Historically, it was the most important port in the Costa Rican Pacific, through which the main exports that allowed the development of the country during the 19th century and part of the 20th century took place. Due to its coastal position, it was an important center of arrival of immigrants towards the middle of the 20th century. Its boom as a tourist destination dates back to 1940.

Puntarenas is one of the most important seaports in the country; the main exports include bananas, coffee and processed fish among other products, which are made through the port of Caldera (under concession since 2006). In 2007, this port had mobilized 640,000 tons in containers, showing an increase from 63,109 Teus containers to 169,827 (a growth of 168%) between 2006 and 2008. 13% of the country's exports leave from this Pacific port, and 28% of the agricultural production that the country allocates for export, especially sugar, alcohol, wood and fresh products such as pineapple, melon and cassava,2 mainly destined for the United States (45% of the country, 62% by Caldera), China, Singapore, Argentina, Chile and Peru, in a country where maritime exports represent 81% according to the average volume of transport.

Puntarenas is one of the most important tourist regions of Costa Rica. Its coasts are adorned with abundant islands, inlets, beaches and natural treasures of great beauty, which make it a tourist destination par excellence, both nationally and internationally, as it is also a stopover for cruise ships. Its territory offers a wide variety of attractions based on the sun and the beach, which are complemented by protected areas, insular and continental areas. The city of Puntarenas functions as a place of stay, distribution, scale and excursion to other beaches and tourist places on the Costa Rican Pacific coast. Tourism is the main economic activity in the country, generating $2,111,000,000 in foreign currency in 2010.
