Golfito

Una puerto que nació de la exportación de banano

Golfito es el séptimo estado de la provincia de Puntarenas en la costa del Pacífico de Costa Rica. La cabecera es Golfito, a unos 290 kilómetros de San José y a 40 kilómetros de la frontera con Panamá.

Según el Censo Nacional de 2011, la población del estado era de 39.150 habitantes, de los cuales el 3,7% nació en el extranjero. Los mismos resultados del censo muestran que hay 11.576 viviendas residenciales, de las cuales el 45,1% se encuentran en buen estado y el 7,2% están sobrepobladas. El 46,9% de sus habitantes vive en zonas urbanas.

Golfito forma parte de la región de Brunca, más concretamente de la denominada región sur. Es el estado más austral del país porque incluye la Bahía Dulce, más de la mitad de la Península de Osa y la región de Costa Rica de la Península de Boruca.

In 1934, the United Fruit Company abandoned its plantation along the Caribbean Sea to move to the Southeast Pacific region. Bananas have been grown in this area since 1936 and the product is shipped for export at the port of Guimenes. In Law No. 133 of July 23, 1938, the company undertook to establish a port in Golfito; construction of the first batch of facilities began early the following year and the terminal was put into operation in 1941. This place became the center of operations for the main banana enclave in the country.

On August 11, 1949, the Golfito Municipal Committee held its first meeting, chaired by Mr. Álvaro Vargas Lizano, exclusive member of Parliament. Fernando Torres Portuguez, Vice President and Juan Gómez Quirós. The municipal secretary is Luis Vargas Quesada (Luis Vargas Quesada) and the political chief José Arguedas Sandí (José Arguedas Sandí).

On June 16, 1961, in the administrative authority of Mario Echandi Jiménez, the title of Villa was granted in accordance with Administrative Decree No. 38 (Regarding the Division of Administrative Areas) Puerto de Golfito. Subsequently, on September 21, 1963, the government of Francisco Orlich Bolmarcich promulgated Law No. 3201, which classified the towns as "cities".
